The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support service does not hand you to a senior technician who then needs to be let into your screen.

“The senior man said he would post it instead, and Bernard was still holding a tin he had been told to leave alone.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, hello — this is the senior technician at Vantage Support Group, taking over from my colleague. They've stepped away from the line, so I'm the one who'll be finishing this off.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new voice claiming seniority feels more credible and makes the listener restart the conversation from a position of respect.

Real company: A real support team keeps the same named contact and gives you a reference number you can call back on.

Bernard Oh — well — now, is that the same firm as before, the Vintage Support people? Only the young man had a very quiet voice. You sound like a proper gentleman, I'll say that. Are you warm enough where you're sitting?
Caller Same firm, yes — Vantage, not Vintage, people get that wrong all the time. I'm perfectly warm, thank you, but we've rather a lot to get through, so if I could just have a look at your machine.

A calm, friendly voice that brushes off confusion and pushes to get onto the machine feels helpful and routine, so people stop checking.

Real company: A real firm never needs to look at your machine to sort out an account, and would happily let you call back on a number you looked up yourself.

Bernard Vantage, right you are. Now — "a look" — do you mean like when the man came to look at the boiler? Only he took his boots off at the door, which I thought was very decent of him. Would you be doing that?
Caller No boots to worry about, I'm not coming to the house — it's all done down the line. And I should say, this is rather pressing, so the sooner we get started the better.
Urgency or fearUnsolicited contact

Pushing for speed stops the person from pausing to check whether any of this is real.

Real company: A real bank or service lets you take your time and never rushes you into acting today.

Bernard Down the line, is it. Well, that's clever. Hang on a tick — there's a lid on this tin that's beaten me all morning. My hands aren't what they were. I'll just have another go at it.
Caller Leave the tin, that'll keep — this won't. What I need is for you to let me have a look at what's on your screen, so leave that where it is and we'll deal with this first.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Leave the tin! Well, that's easy said. It's the shortbread one, you see, and once the lid's off it'll go soft and I'll have to eat the lot. Do you take sugar? I'd have the pot on for you, only I can't reach the shelf.
Caller Sugar's not the issue and nor's the shelf — I've been on this line a fair while now and nothing's moving. Just a look at your machine, that's all I'm after.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Oh, I don't know about the machine. It's the deaf aid that's the trouble, it whistles when I cup my ear — can you hear that? That's not you, is it. Only I've had it on the radio and now I can't tell.
Caller I'll send it in the post instead. Save us both the trouble. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
