The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A second caller claiming to be senior is still a stranger asking for access to your machine.

“The senior man said the first lad couldn't get it done, and Bernard asked whether the machine was the big grey one or the flat thing under the telly.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician line — you've been passed up to me because the first lad couldn't get it done. So let's not start over; just let me have a look at your machine and we'll have this sorted.
Fake authority or brand impersonationRemote access request

A confident senior title makes the listener feel the problem is serious and that this person is the one who can fix it.

Real company: A real support team opens a ticket and contacts you through a number you can verify yourself.

Bernard Oh — well, you're the second one now, are you? That's very thorough. Only the first fellow kept saying "Vantage" and I told him it was Vintage, like the wine, and he didn't seem to like that. Would you like a cup of tea while you're waiting?
Caller Very good, sir. No tea, thank you — the first fellow's notes say you weren't able to get him anywhere near the machine, so I'm stepping in to take it from here. If you'd just let me have a look at it, we can close this off.
Supervisor hand-offRemote access requestUrgency or fear

A fresh, more senior voice resets the conversation and makes the request feel official and final.

Real company: A real support team logs the case and contacts you through a number you can verify yourself.

Bernard The machine, yes. Is that the big grey one or the little flat thing under the telly? Only I've a biscuit tin here I can't get the lid off, and I'd rather sort that first, my wrists aren't what they were.
Caller Either one, sir, they're both machines and I can see them from here in the notes. But this really does need doing now, before the report flags up — so just let me have a look and then you can get back to the tin.

Bernard Flags up, you say. Is that like the radio, when it drifts off the station? I had the play on earlier and I've lost the thread entirely — there was a man with a boat, I think. What was it you wanted me to do with the tin?
Caller Nothing with the tin, sir, forget the tin — it's the machine I need. It needs doing this minute, so if you'd just let me have a look at it, we're finished and I'm off the line.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Well, there's no need to rush off. You're the first person to ring all morning and the house is very quiet. Would it keep till after the play's finished? Only I want to know what became of the man with the boat.
Caller It won't keep, sir, and I'd rather you didn't wander off into a story. The access is the thing — just a look, that's all I'm after, and then the line's yours again.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Oh you're a marvellous one for the word look. Now, my knees are the problem — I can't get down to that flat thing under the telly. Would it be seen from the armchair, do you think?
Caller I'll send it in the post instead. Save us both the trouble. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
