The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

No real support desk needs to look at your screen to fix a problem, and a second person taking over is not proof the first one was genuine.

“The senior man said he needed to look at the screen himself, and Bernard asked which corner of the room he wanted to see.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician's desk — I've picked up from my colleague, so we can start again properly from the top.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A fresh, senior-sounding voice resets the conversation and makes the earlier doubts feel settled, so the target relaxes and starts over compliantly.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official line.

Bernard Oh, hello again — is your colleague all right? He sounded a bit rushed off his feet. Now, what was the name of the firm — Vintage Support, was it? I want to get it right, my niece asks me about these things.
Caller Vantage, Vantage Support Group — and he's fine, just handed it up to me because this needs a proper look. I'll take it from here, Bernard.

Bernard Vantage, right you are, I'll remember that. Vantage. Now — have you eaten? Only it's nearly that time and I've a photograph here I've been meaning to show somebody.
Caller That's kind, but I've a pile of these reports to get through and yours is sitting near the top. Look, the longer this sits open, the harder it gets for us to close it off — can we get to it now?
Urgency or fear

A ticking clock makes people act fast and skip the checking they would normally do.

Real company: A real company sets out its process in writing and lets you take the time you need.

Bernard Oh, I'm not stopping you. You carry on while I find my glasses — they were on the arm of the chair. The photograph's of my neighbour's shed, and you'd not credit the colour they've painted it.
Caller Right, well, when you've found those, the quickest thing is if I can just have a look at your end myself. It's cramped from where I'm sitting and I can't see what's going on.
Remote access requestFake authority or brand impersonation

Asking to look at your screen feels like helpful service, so you hand over control without noticing you are giving away your private accounts.

Real company: A real support team never takes control of your device from a cold call, and would book a proper appointment through official channels.

Bernard You can't see it from there? Well, that's a relief — I've been sat here thinking you could see straight into my front room. Let me just move the paper off the table. Which corner of it did you want to see?
Caller No corner, nothing like that — I only need a look, that's all it is, a look at your screen from where I am. And the library rang about that book of yours, so we do need to move along.

Bernard Oh, the book — three weeks past due and they've my name on it in red ink. I'll pop it through the door on my way to the shop. But how would you see a screen through a telephone? You'd be squinting.
Caller I'll get someone else to ring you. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
