The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A sudden promotion to senior technician is a script change, not a person, and a real support call does not hand you off to whoever is free.

“The caller promoted himself to senior and Bernard offered him a cup of something instead.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Bernard speaking. Oh — hello there. This is the senior technician at Vantage Support Group. My colleague's passed your case over to me, so let's get this sorted without any more fuss.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A calm senior voice arriving after a hand-off feels like escalation to someone with real power to fix things.

Real company: A real support firm gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their published line.

Bernard Senior, is it? Well, that's a step up. What was your name again — I had it written on the back of an envelope and Mavis has been at the envelopes. She's taken against the postman, you see.
Caller It's the senior line at Vantage Support Group, that's what matters. What your post gets up to is between you and the postman, but I'd like to have a look at the case my colleague opened for you.

Bernard Vantage — yes, that's what I said, Vintage Support. Funny name for it. Look, would you like a cup of something? You sound like a man who's been on his feet all morning.
Caller No cup, thanks — morning's nearly gone and I need to get this seen to before the afternoon rush. It wants a proper look at that machine of yours, and today's the window for it.
Urgency or fear

A closing window makes people act fast and skip the checking they would normally do.

Real company: A real support team books a time that suits you and never makes today the only option.

Bernard The window, is it? Well, the window in the front room's jammed since Easter. I've had a man out twice. Would your lot see to a window, or is it only the machine?
Caller Not the window, no — I'm not your glazier. Let me just look at the machine myself, and I'll know straight away if it's the sort of thing that's causing problems.
Remote access requestFake authority or brand impersonation

Offering to check the machine himself sounds helpful and expert, so the victim lowers their guard and lets a stranger in.

Real company: A real tradesperson or support agent would never ask to take control of your device to diagnose a problem.

Bernard Well, that's just it, I've a few machines about the place and none of them gets up to much. There's the one in the front room making a noise like a bee. Would that be the sort you mean?
Caller That's the very sort, yes — buzzing's never a good sign. If you let me have a quick look, I can settle it before the afternoon lot come in.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard You can't have a look at a bee in a box, surely. Hold on, there's a commotion behind me.
Caller I'll get someone else to ring you. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
