The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A second caller claiming to take over a case is not proof the first one was real, so nothing needs checking on their word.

“The senior man wanted his own eyes on the machine and Bernard asked whether the fault made a click or kept quiet.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Evening, this is Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — I'm taking over your case from my colleague. Now, about this fault on your line, I'd appreciate it if you'd let me have a look at it.
Fake authority or brand impersonationUnsolicited contact

A title and a hand-off from a colleague make the caller sound established and official, so people lower their guard.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official line.

Bernard Oh — evening. Varnish Support, is it? A lad from your place rang earlier. I was watching a programme about lighthouses just now, the old keeper climbing up with his lamp. What was it you wanted a look at?
Caller No, Vantage, Vantage Support Group — different firm. The fault my colleague flagged is still open on your line, and it's the sort of thing that spreads if it's left sitting, so I'd like a look at it.

A new voice sounds more official and the vague threat of something spreading pushes the person to act before thinking.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official line.

Bernard Spreads, does it? Like damp, you mean. My neighbour had damp climb the wall and it took a whole summer to sort. Would you be warm enough out there this evening? You're not sat in the cold somewhere?
Caller Damp's not far off, actually — it creeps about. And thank you, I'm fine, I'm at my desk. But I'll be straight with you, that fault needs looking at tonight, before it's sat there overnight doing who knows what.
Urgency or fear
Bernard Tonight? Well, I've the wireless on at nine, but that's not set in stone. Is it a fault you can see from your desk there, or do you have to come out to it? Only I've never had a fault that needed looking at before.
Caller No, I can't see it from here, that's just it — I'd need my own eyes on your machine. If you'd just let me have a look, I can run over it and tell you straight.
Remote access request

Offering to look directly feels helpful and personal, so the target lowers their guard and hands over control.

Real company: A real support team never needs to take control of your device to check it, and will say so plainly.

Bernard My eyes are not what they were either. I've reading glasses somewhere, they'll be under a cushion. What would you be looking for, exactly? Is it a thing that makes a noise, like a click, or is it more of a quiet fault?
Caller Quiet, mostly. Look, do me a turn and let me take a quick gander at it myself — that's the fastest way to know what we're dealing with.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Well, the fellow before you said he couldn't manage it, so I'd have thought he'd know. Now you want a gander. Are you sure you're not mixing me up with somebody in a bungalow?
Caller I'll send it in the post instead. Save us both the trouble. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
