The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support desk will not call you first and announce it is an escalations team. Unsolicited callers who want to look inside your computer are selling fear, not help.

“The senior technician said the fault had no colour and the records said it was spreading, and Bernard asked whether it would suit a bungalow.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician speaking — sorry, my colleague had to hand you over, we're a bit stretched today. Just so we're clear on who you're dealing with, it's the escalations desk here.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A title and an escalations desk sound official, so people assume the caller has been checked and stop questioning.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official website.

Bernard Escalations, right you are. Now, is that anything to do with the lift? Only my neighbour said the lift in the block was making a funny noise, and I said to her, well, that's a job for the men in the van.
Caller No, not the lift, nothing to do with lifts. It's about your computer, which our records show is flagging up on our system — so I need you to let me have a look at it.
Fake scan or planted problemsRemote access requestUnsolicited contact

It invents a problem you cannot see and offers to fix it, so you feel you must cooperate to stay safe.

Real company: A real support team never calls out of the blue about a fault and never asks to look inside your computer.

Bernard Oh, the computer. Hang on — one of my slippers has gone clean under the chair and I'm not putting my bare foot on that carpet, it's perishing. Say that again about the records?
Caller Leave the foot for a moment, this is time-sensitive — the fault's been sitting there and it won't wait. If I can just have a look at the machine, we can stop it spreading.
Urgency or fearRemote access request

A ticking clock shuts down thinking, so the target agrees to access before weighing whether the request makes sense.

Real company: A real support team books a time that suits you and never needs to reach into your machine to stop a fault spreading.

Bernard It won't wait, no. Well — mine's the little grey one with the screen, and it does hum a bit, but I always say that's just it thinking. Tell me, is this going to take long? I've a programme on at four.
Caller That humming could be the very thing, so we should get in front of it. I won't keep you past four — if you just open the machine up and let me look, it's a short job.

Bernard Open it up? It's got a lid, I suppose. But what colour does the thing come in — the fault, I mean. Is it the sort that would get on all right in a bungalow?
Caller The fault doesn't have a colour, it's internal — it's not a thing you'd see. Look, if you can't get into it, I'll get the details logged and try you again another day, because this isn't landing tonight.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Oh, that's a shame, I was just getting the hang of it. Well, you've been very good to ring. Are you eating properly, wherever you're calling from? It's a cold night for it.
Caller I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
