The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support person never needs to look inside your machine from their end, so nothing you own should be opened for a caller.

“The senior man said the fault was live and the account was on the line, and Bernard wondered whether it was teatime where he was.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Right — this is the senior technician here at Vantage Support Group now, taking over the case. Before we go any further, I need you to understand you're speaking to the person who actually resolves these.

A new voice with a grander title makes the problem feel serious and the fix feel official.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a callback line you can verify yourself.

Bernard Oh, you're the senior one, are you. Have they got you a proper chair up there? Only my nephew's in an office and he says his back's been at him since Easter. Anyway, I've got this photograph here of the pier at Whitsun — you can see my brother in the hat, the one that isn't mine.
Caller A photograph, right — that's lovely, but the case I've taken over is about your line, not the pier. I'm the senior one here, so if you'd just let me have a look at the machine, we can settle it today.

A fresh, more senior voice feels like real escalation, so people relax their guard and comply.

Real company: A real support team logs the case and calls back through a number you can verify yourself.

Bernard Vantage, is it? I'd have said Vintage. Vintage Support — that's nice, that's a good name. Now, look at this — my brother's got both his arms up like he's conducting something. Has it gone very grey where you are? It's gone very grey here.
Caller It's Vantage, not the other one. Look, I'd not leave the machine a minute longer if I were you — these things move quickly once they start, and it's your own account on the line here.

Bernard My account, you say. Well, I've had that a long while, it's older than the shed. Are you anywhere near a window? Only there's a pigeon on my fence and I can't think why he's come back.
Caller A window, yes, there's one behind me — but never mind the bird. If you open the front of the machine and let me see it from here, I can clear this off your account before it gets worse.

Bernard Open the front of it? Oh — well — now, I'm not sure it has a front as such, it's the one with the lump on the back. Hold on, I've got the oven going for a cup of tea, I'll not be a tick. There. Where were we?
Caller Have you got it in front of you now? Only I can't hold the line much longer, and this needs doing while the fault is still live.

Bernard It's on the table, but the table's under the window and I can't reach it without shifting the fern. Is it teatime where you are? You sound like you could do with a sit down, honestly.
Caller Honestly, I don't know why I bother. Good afternoon.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
