The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support desk does not put a deadline on looking at your machine or hand you to a supervisor to hurry you along.

“The caller passed the file to a senior name and set a closing time, and Bernard asked whether the look was the same one or a new one.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, this is Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — my colleague says the line's still open. What's that noise in the background, is the wireless on?
Fake authority or brand impersonationUnsolicited contact

A confident title and a claim of being briefed make the caller sound already trusted and in charge.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on the official website.

Bernard Oh, the radio, yes — it's a play, a murder thing, they've just found the body in the greenhouse and I've missed who did it. Are you warm enough where you're sitting? It's turned chilly.
Caller I'm quite comfortable, thank you. Sir, I'm taking this over as the senior technician — we do need to get that look at your machine before the case goes cold on our side.
Supervisor hand-offUrgency or fear

A new, more senior voice feels like escalation and care, which lowers suspicion and makes the request feel official.

Real company: A real support team keeps one named agent and a reference number, and never invents a deadline to rush you.

Bernard Before the whatsit runs out on your side, you mean. Is that the same look the other fellow wanted, or a different one? Only I've got the play to finish first.
Caller Same look, same job, just now under my name on the file. And these cases don't sit open indefinitely, sir — if it lapses tonight it's out of my hands entirely.

Bernard Tonight, is it. Well, the thing is, my neighbour — no, not him, the other one — she said a program went wrong on her set and she lost all her photographs of the seafront.
Caller That's precisely the sort of thing we're trying to prevent, sir. If I could just have a look at your machine now, we can make sure that doesn't happen to you.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear

It turns a scary warning into a helpful offer, so the listener feels relief and wants to cooperate quickly.

Real company: A real bank or software firm never asks to look inside your computer over the phone, and will tell you to call the number on your card or bill.

Bernard Oh, that's kind. But it's not really a machine, it's more of a box with a hum to it, and it's got a doily on top that my sister made. I'd have to move the doily.
Caller Nothing has to be moved, sir. It's the look I need — that's the only thing outstanding.

Bernard What, the look. Well — hold on, the radio's got a woman on it who's selling a house and doesn't want to. Have you heard this one?
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
