The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support call never needs remote access to fix a problem you did not report, and a clock on it is pressure, not service.

“The senior technician asked to look at the computer. Bernard offered the washing machine and a parrot instead.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — I'm taking over your case from my colleague. Just to confirm, I've got your file open in front of me, so let's get this sorted.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new voice claiming seniority feels like escalation and care, so people relax and stop questioning the earlier steps.

Real company: A real support team tells you how to reach them through official channels, not by cold-calling and announcing a hand-off.

Bernard Oh — well — now, that's quick. Your colleague, is he all right? He sounded a bit rushed. Anyway, you've got my file — does it say anything about the fence? Only my neighbour's cat keeps squeezing through the gap and I've been meaning to mention it to somebody.
Caller He's fine, he's fine — rushed is just how he is. And no, the file doesn't mention any fence, so let's stay on the case, just to confirm, because yours has been flagged as needing a senior look.
Supervisor hand-offUrgency or fearFake authority or brand impersonation

A senior figure sounds more credible, so people lower their guard and stop questioning the story.

Real company: A real company names the department and gives you a reference you can verify by calling its published number.

Bernard A senior look. That's nice. What sort of look — because my reading glasses are somewhere, I had them for the radio listings. Would you be able to see it if I fetched them, or does that not matter for a look?
Caller No glasses needed, sir, it's not that sort of look — it's more that I can see it from my end, if you just let me have a look at yours. And I should say, there's a bit of a clock on this one.
Urgency or fearRemote access request

A vague deadline makes people act before they think, and the clock pressure stops them asking why a stranger needs to see their screen.

Real company: A real support team explains the problem in plain terms and never rushes you into giving access on the spot.

Bernard A clock on it — is there a deadline? Only I've got a biscuit tin here I can't get the lid off, and that's been my whole morning. Would you hold on a tick while I have another go at it?
Caller Hold on, sir — the tin can wait, this really can't. If you could just let me have a look at your machine, one quick look, we can close this off before anything lapses.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear

A rushed deadline makes people grant access before they stop to ask who is really asking.

Real company: A real bank or software firm never needs to look inside your computer to fix an account problem.

Bernard Lapses — that sounds serious. Which machine are we on about, though? I've got the radio in the kitchen and the washing machine's been making a funny noise since Tuesday. Is it that one?
Caller Not the washing machine, sir — the computer. Vantage Support, senior technician, the one who's been trying to have a look all morning. I'll be quick.
Remote access requestFake authority or brand impersonationUrgency or fear

A calm, senior-sounding voice plus a promise to be quick makes the request feel routine and hard to refuse.

Real company: A real support team never calls out of the blue to look at your computer, and never asks to connect without you starting the contact.

Bernard Ah, Vantage. Right you are. It's in the back room and the parrot doesn't like it in there, she gets shouty. Mavis. Could you hear her down the line just now?

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
