The Supervisor Hand-Off
A sudden hand-off to a supervisor is a script change, not a promotion, and the urgency is there to stop you thinking.
“The caller offered the ladder. The supervisor wanted the landing machine. Neither got looked at.”
The call
Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.
A new voice with a grander title feels more credible, so people relax and answer questions they would otherwise question.
Real company: A real support team identifies itself with a reference number you can verify by calling the number on your own bill.
A vague official-sounding problem plus a promise to be quick nudges the person to cooperate before thinking.
Real company: A real company states its name, why it is calling, and lets you verify the call through a number you look up yourself.
A deadline plus the threat of escalation makes people act fast to avoid a consequence they cannot see.
Real company: A real firm puts deadlines in writing and never rushes you into confirming details over an unexpected call.
A new voice sounds more official, and the ticking clock pushes the listener to hand over control before thinking.
Real company: A real support team never asks to take over your computer from an unexpected call, and never rushes you with a deadline.
Asking to look at the device feels like help, and the deadline makes Bernard want to say yes quickly.
Real company: A real support team never takes control of your device from a cold call. They book a visit or point you to official support channels.
What the pattern is
The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.
What to do instead
Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
