The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A hand-off to a supervisor is just a second voice asking for the same thing, so nothing has changed and nothing needs to be shown.

“The senior one said he needed eyes on the screen, and Bernard asked whether he was coming round in person.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here, taking over your case. I'm told the first lad couldn't get anywhere, so I'll be finishing this myself.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new voice with a grander title makes the problem feel official and the fix feel close.

Real company: A real support team logs the case and gives you a reference number, not a fresh stranger claiming your file.

Bernard Oh — well, that's thorough of you. Is the first lad all right? He sounded a bit rushed. Only I've got the coal fire going and I'm not sure he was warm enough, sitting wherever it is you all sit.
Caller He's fine, he's just moved on to another case. Now, about your machine — if you'd let me have a look at it, I can sort this out properly.
Supervisor hand-offRemote access request

A fresh voice feels like a promotion to a higher authority, so the listener relaxes and stops questioning the story.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on your own.

Bernard A look? Well, I don't mind a look, but you'll have to tell me what you're looking at. I've got my glasses somewhere. Which day is it today, by the way? I've had it down as Thursday since Tuesday.
Caller It's Thursday, that's right. And I can't tell you what I'm looking at until I'm actually looking at it — that's rather the point.
Urgency or fear

Vague hints of something serious make the listener fill the gap with their own worst fears.

Real company: A real organisation states plainly what the matter is and puts it in writing.

Bernard Well, that's reassuring, someone keeping track. Mind you, I'd have argued it was the end of the week, so you've saved me a job. What was it you needed to look at, in plain terms? I'm not much for the fiddly bits.
Caller In plain terms, I need eyes on your screen while you're sitting there, so let me have a look at it. Do you see what I'm after?

Bernard Eyes on it — but you're not in the room, are you. Unless you're coming round, and then I'd want the milk money settled first. How's the weather with you? Turned here.
Caller Never mind the weather. Look, the first technician finished their notes and handed it straight to me, so we're nearly done with this — I just need you to let me see it.

Bernard Handed it straight to you — well, that's efficient. Whoever you are, you're very organised. I've got a coal fire that wants another shovel before it goes out, so I'll not be a tick.
Caller I'll send it in the post instead. Save us both the trouble. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
