The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A sudden senior technician who needs today's access is the same caller with a new title, so the answer stays no.

“The senior one said it had to be today, and Bernard asked whether the week after might do instead.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Hello, this is the senior technician at Vantage Support Group, taking over from my colleague. Whatever he was telling you about that— the fence, was it?— I'm the one who can actually sort this out.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new voice with a bigger title feels more credible, so people relax and repeat what they already said.

Real company: A real support team keeps one named contact and gives you a reference number, not a fresh senior voice mid-call.

Bernard Oh, the fence, yes, that's the neighbour's cat — it keeps squeezing through the gap by the shed. Are you the senior one then? My goodness, they've sent the important fellow out. Would you like a cup of something while we sort this out?
Caller I'm the senior technician, yes, so we can get this settled properly. I don't need anything to drink, I just need you to let me have a look at the computer.
Supervisor hand-offRemote access request

A new, more senior voice feels like escalation and care, which lowers the listener's guard before a request for access.

Real company: A real support team logs the case and calls back on a number you look up yourself, not a stranger asking to look at your computer.

Bernard A look at the computer, right you are — although the screen's gone a funny sort of yellow colour the last week or two. Is that the bit you'd be looking at? And are you warm enough where you're sat?
Caller That could well be part of the problem, that yellow tint, so the sooner I get a look the better. There's a bit of urgency on this one, because it needs sorting before the system flags your line as unresolved.
Urgency or fearFake scan or planted problems

A made-up deadline makes Bernard feel that waiting is itself a risk, so he stops thinking and starts complying.

Real company: A real support team books a normal appointment and never claims a system will punish you for a delay.

Bernard Unresolved — that does sound serious. Hold on, there's a shovel's worth of coal wanting the fire or it'll go out entirely, back in a tick. Now, what was it the system would be flagging? My line, you said?
Caller Yes, your line — it gets flagged and then things can get awkward for you down the road. So before we get to that, let me just have a look at the machine and I'll clear the whole thing.

Bernard Awkward down the road, you say — though I'm not much for roads these days. Which machine would that be, the one in the front room or the other one by the radio? I've never been sure which does what.
Caller The one that's actually giving the trouble — that's the one I need the look at. Honestly, whichever one you can get to fastest, because this really does need doing today.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Today, is it. Well, the one by the radio's behind a stack of records and I'd have to move those, and my back isn't what it was. Could it not wait till the week after? The neighbour's cat has been at the garden again and I ought to see to that first.
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
