The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line can explain a fault over the phone. Anyone who says only they can look at your machine is not support.

“The senior man insisted the looking had to be done from his end, and Bernard asked what colour the fault was.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — they've passed your case up to me because it needs finishing properly. Before we go any further, though, what was it you were saying?
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A senior title and a promotion from a colleague make the caller sound important and make Bernard feel his case is being taken seriously.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on the official website.

Bernard Oh, hello — is that the Vantage lot again? There's a photograph here of my nephew on a boat and I was just telling the other fella about it — he's got a hat on, held on with elastic, and the wind's taking the sail right over. Do you want me to fetch my glasses? They're about somewhere.
Caller The nephew in the hat, yes — lovely. Now, this needs sorting today because the case has been sitting open a while, and I'm the one who can close it off for you.
Supervisor hand-offUrgency or fear

A new voice claiming authority makes the problem feel official and time-bound, so people stop checking and start complying.

Real company: A real bank or insurer lets you call back on a published number and never rushes a decision on the same call.

Bernard Today, is it? Well, I'm not going anywhere — the garden's had it, it's that damp. What was it you wanted closed, exactly? I had it written on the back of an envelope and the envelope's gone wandering.
Caller Damp out there, is it — right. It's the fault flag sitting against your account, and the longer it stays up the worse the mess when the line cuts out. So if I could just have a look at your machine, we'll have it down sharpish.
Urgency or fearRemote access requestUnsolicited contact

A ticking clock and a vague looming consequence push people to act before they can think it through.

Real company: A real bank or telecom never phones out of the blue to fix a fault on your machine, and never asks to connect to it.

Bernard Have a look at it? Well, it's in the front room and it's mostly the radio I use — there's a programme on at four about hedges. Oh, but you'd want the machine itself. My glasses are on my head, I've just found them, so hold on while I sort myself out.
Caller Take your time, but I do need to be looking at it myself, on my end — that's the only way I can pull the fault. If you'll just let me in for a look, we can be done before your hedges come on.

Bernard Let you in where, though? The front door sticks a bit but it's not locked. And what is it you'd be looking at — the screen? It's smeary.
Caller The screen, yes — if you just let me have a look at it from here, that's all I need. It's not something I can talk you through, it has to be me doing the looking.

Bernard Oh, I see. Well, that's a shame, because I don't know how you'd get here from wherever you are, and the buses stop running at six. What colour is the fault, when it's sitting there? Is it a red one?
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
