The Supervisor Hand-Off

A sudden hand-off to a senior technician is a script change, not a promotion, and the urgency it brings is the tell.

“The senior man said the fault would lock up soon and asked for a look, and Bernard asked what colour he would be wanting it in.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — sorry, what was that you were saying just now?
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A title and an interruption make the caller sound senior and in charge, so people defer and repeat themselves.

Real company: A real support team states its name and case number plainly and never leans on a job title to sound official.

Bernard Oh — well — now, you've come on the line in a bit of a rush, haven't you. I was telling the other one about my jigsaw. It's a picture of a harbour, and there's been one piece missing since Easter, and I've looked everywhere.
Caller I'm sure it'll turn up. Now, my colleague tells me we haven't got anywhere with the machine, so I'm taking this over personally — I just need a look at it, if you'd let me.
Supervisor hand-offRemote access request

A fresh, senior-sounding voice resets the conversation and makes the request feel like a personal favour rather than a demand.

Real company: A real support team logs the case and works through one named agent, not a sudden new person asking to look at your machine.

Bernard A look at it? Well, there's a gap in the sky over the harbour on my table, and I've hunted high and low for the bit that fills it. You'd be none the wiser looking at that. Are you warm enough where you are?
Caller Warm as toast, thanks. Listen, this is a serious one — if the fault isn't dealt with soon it'll lock right up on you, so I do need to get this look in.
Urgency or fear

A looming deadline makes people act fast and skip the checking they would normally do.

Real company: A real support team lets you book a visit at your own pace and puts the risk in writing.

Bernard Lock up, you say. Oh — now — hold on, what's today? It's Tuesday, isn't it. No, it's not Tuesday, it's Thursday, I'm certain of it. Either way, the thing's been sitting quietly since Easter. It can wait till after my cup of something.
Caller I hear you, but quiet doesn't mean safe. I still need that look before the day's out, so what do you say?
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Before the day's out — well, you're very keen, I'll give you that. I've got the radio on in the other room and I've half an ear on a programme about otters, which is doing my head in if I'm honest. What colour would you be wanting it in?
Caller Colour's not the thing here. Honestly, I've been at this all evening and the line keeps cracking up — I'm getting nowhere with you tonight, am I.
Remote access request
Bernard Well, I wouldn't say nowhere. You've been very good company. The line's been clear as a bell my end, mind. Is it the weather where you are, do you think?
Caller I'll try again when the line's behaving. Good afternoon.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
