The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line does not need to look at your machine to fix an account problem it cannot name.

“The caller insisted on a look at the machine, and Bernard wanted to know which machine, and whether he had eaten.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician speaking — sorry, who's been on the line to you before me? I need to pick this up properly.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new, more senior voice implies the problem is serious and that you are now in trusted hands.

Real company: A real support team logs the case and tells you the reference, rather than asking you to re-explain to a stranger.

Bernard Oh, a young fella, very patient. What was it he said — Fandango Support, something like that. Look, before we get going, are you warm enough where you are? It's turned bitter out, and I've just put another shovel on the fire.
Caller Vantage, Mr Bernard, not Fandango, Vantage Support Group — I'm the one who finishes these jobs. The fire can wait, this is about your account being open to the outside.
Supervisor hand-offUrgency or fear

A new voice claiming seniority feels more credible, and the pressure to act now stops the person from pausing to check.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a callback number you can verify yourself, and never rushes you.

Bernard Open to the outside? That'd be handy, the back door sticks something dreadful in this weather. Oh — you said your firm, didn't catch it. Vandal Support, was it? And is it just yourself on the phone, or have you got a cup of something there?
Caller Vantage, Vantage Support Group — I've told you twice now. And no, nothing's handy, this is serious: there's activity on your account that shouldn't be there, and I'd rather catch it this hour than next.
Urgency or fearFake authority or brand impersonation
Bernard Sorry, the line's a bit muffled on this side, my left ear isn't what it was. Vandal, right you are. Activity, you said — activity where? Because there's a deal of it in the garden, the blackbird's been at the seed again.
Caller Vantage Support Group, Bernard — and it's your account, not your blackbird. Look, if you'd just let me have a look at the machine, I can see what's been going on and put it right.
Remote access requestFake authority or brand impersonation

Offering to look at the machine sounds like helpful service, so the victim hands over control instead of questioning who is asking.

Real company: A real support team never takes remote control of your computer from an unexpected call. You call them, through a number you look up yourself.

Bernard Have a look at the machine? Which machine would that be — the one with the washing in, or the little radio in the kitchen? Only they're both a bit temperamental. Hold on, I've got my glasses somewhere.
Caller Your computer, Bernard — the one you're on. I just need a look at it before this gets away from me.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Oh, the computer. It's in the back room and it's been sulking since Tuesday. Tell you what though, before any of that — have you eaten? You sound like a man who's been on his feet all morning.
Caller I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
