The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line does not hand you up to a more senior technician and then demand urgent access to your computer.

“The senior man said he needed the machine sharpish, and the householder was still working out which machine he meant.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Yes, hello, this is the senior technician at Vantage Support Group, taking over from my colleague. We've had a report flagged on your line, so I'd just like a look at the machine.
Fake authority or brand impersonationUnsolicited contact

A new voice with a grander title feels more credible, so people relax and stop questioning the call.

Real company: A real support team contacts you through a channel you already use and never cold-calls about a flagged line.

Bernard Oh, hello — you're the senior one, are you? The other fellow sounded about twelve. Now then, what was the name of your firm again? Vintage something. Have you eaten today? You sound like a man who's skipped his lunch.
Caller Vantage Support Group, and yes, I've eaten, thank you. I only need a quick look at the machine, so if you'd just let me have that, we can sort the report out.

A friendly, casual tone and a small request make the ask feel routine and easy to agree to.

Real company: A real support team never asks to take control of your computer from an unexpected call, and would point you to official contact details.

Bernard Vintage Support Group, that's the one. Well, I'm a bit at sixes and sevens here — I've lost my glasses and I can't do a thing without them. They're not in the kitchen, I know that much. Hang on, is that your radio in the background or mine?
Caller No radio here, that's yours. Never mind the glasses for a moment — I need you at that machine sharpish, before this gets any worse.
Urgency or fear

Rushing someone past their doubts keeps them from pausing to check whether the request makes sense.

Real company: A real support team gives you time and a reference number, and never pushes you to act before you can think.

Bernard Worse? Oh dear. Now, the machine — is that the talking one or the one with the little screen? And would it be all right in a bungalow, do you think? Only my niece keeps on at me about moving. Hold on, I've just felt something on my head.
Caller It's whichever machine you use to get on the internet, and yes, a bungalow's fine. Just let me have that look at it, quickly, before the problem spreads.

Bernard They were on my head the whole time. Isn't that the way of it. Now — the internet machine. I had a young man set it up, and I keep a cloth over it because of the dust. Would you like a cup of something while I go and look?
Caller A cloth over it, right, that's fine. I don't need anything to drink, I need you to clear that cloth off and let me look at the thing itself, so to speak.
Remote access request
Bernard I'm not sure it's decent, uncovered. Mavis will sit and stare if it's shiny — that's the bird, not my niece. And it's gone ever so quiet your end all of a sudden.
Caller I'll get someone else to ring you. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
