The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real fault on your line gets fixed by the company you pay, not by someone who needs to watch your screen today.

“The caller said the fault was logged since morning and wanted a few minutes at the screen, and the householder said he had never got on with it.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — sorry, they've handed you up to me because it's got rather above the first desk's head. You were telling my colleague about something you saw on the television, I gather?
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A higher title sounds more credible, and the hand-off makes the caller seem like a real team with real procedures.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official line.

Bernard Oh, the lighthouses! Nineteen eighty-seven, that was, there was a chap on a rock and they had to winch him off sideways, I've never forgotten it. Are you the senior one, then? Do they give you a special chair?
Caller Senior, yes, that's right, and no special chair, sadly. About that lighthouses programme — it does sound like the sort of thing that leaves a mark, but I do need us to come back to your machine, if you'd let me have a look at it.
Supervisor hand-offRemote access request

A calm, senior-sounding voice builds trust and steers the talk back to getting onto the machine.

Real company: A real support team never needs to look inside your computer to discuss a programme or a bill.

Bernard Have a look at it? Well, you're welcome to look, but it's a hefty old thing and it lives under the desk in the back room. Whereabouts are you, anyway — are you warm enough down there?
Caller Warm enough, thank you, that's kind. It's not the machine's weight I'm worried about — there's a fault logged against your line and it's been sitting there since this morning, so it really does want looking at today.
Urgency or fearFake authority or brand impersonation

A vague fault that has been waiting all day makes the problem feel real and time-sensitive, so the target stops questioning and starts cooperating.

Real company: A real phone or utility company writes to you about line faults and never pushes you to act the same day by phone.

Bernard Since this morning? Well, nobody's told me a thing. Hang on, was that the radio just then, or is that my hearing? I'll just turn it down a touch. Now — a fault on the line, you said?
Caller The radio's not mine to say, but the fault is real enough and logged against your line — it's the sort of thing that gets worse if it's left. If you'd just let me have a look at what's happening on your end, I can tell you straight whether it's serious.

Bernard Have a look, have a look — you keep saying that. What would you be looking at, exactly? Because I've got a young lad from the village does my machines, and he charges me a fiver and a cup of tea.
Caller A fiver and a cup of tea, that's very reasonable — but this is above his pay grade, I'm afraid. It's the fault on the line I'd be looking at, nothing more sinister than that, and I only need a few minutes at your screen.

Bernard My screen. Oh — well, now, there's a thing, because I've never much got on with that screen. It went all peculiar on me last winter and I never quite got it back. Would it matter terribly if we left it be?
Caller I'll ring you back another day. Bye now.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
