The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support desk never needs to see your screen, and saying you are the senior one is a reason to hang up.

“The senior technician offered one look at the screen and the householder asked whether he was warm enough where he was.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller That's the thing, though, I'm not the fellow who rang before, I'm the senior technician here at Vantage Support Group, so what he couldn't sort out, I can.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A fresh voice claiming higher rank feels like escalation to someone who can finally fix things, so doubt fades.

Real company: A real support team logs the case and the same agent or a named manager follows up, not a stranger claiming seniority.

Bernard Oh, senior — well, that's good, that's very good. Now, did the first one have his tea? Because I've got the pot on, and it seems a shame. Sorry — what was the name of the firm again? Vantage, was it? I knew a Vantage once, but he was a butcher.
Caller Vantage Support Group, that's right. And he's had his — look, forget the first one, I've got his notes here and I can take it from the top myself.

Bernard Notes, lovely. I've got a photograph here I've been meaning to tell somebody about — my sister's wedding, ever such a big hat. Would you like to hear about it while you're getting sorted? It's no trouble.
Caller I'd love to, honestly, but I've got a queue building up and yours is the one I'm meant to be on. So let's get you sorted first, before something goes wrong at your end.
Urgency or fear

A made-up queue and a vague warning make Bernard feel he is holding things up and that delay will cost him.

Real company: A real support agent gives you a reference number and lets you call back at your own pace.

Bernard Something goes wrong at my end? Oh, dear. Is it the fence again? Next door's cat has been at it something shocking, walks along the top like it owns the place. Only it isn't my fence, it's the neighbour's. Anyway — what was it you wanted?
Caller Look, that's the thing, I can't see what's happened from here, so if you just let me have a look at your screen I can tell you straight away.
Remote access requestUrgency or fear

Offering to look at the screen feels like helpfulness, and the promise of an instant answer pressures Bernard to agree before he thinks.

Real company: A real bank or software firm never asks to view your screen from an unexpected call, and would tell you to ring the number on your card.

Bernard A look at my screen? Oh — hold the line a moment, there's someone at the door. Sorry — no, it was next door's cat again. What was it you wanted a look at?
Caller Your screen, that's all. One look and I can tell you what's what, rather than passing you round the houses again.

Bernard Passing me round the houses? I've not been anywhere. Are you warm enough where you are, though? It's perishing out and you've been on this phone a fair while.
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
