The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line will accept no for an answer, and a fake one will hang up on you instead.

“The senior technician said there was a window closing and asked to have a look from his end, and the householder asked whether he kept many pets.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician speaking — sorry, the line dropped with my colleague. Could you just confirm you're the account holder for the computer we've been discussing?
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new voice claiming seniority makes the story feel official and resets the conversation so you repeat details without noticing.

Real company: A real support team keeps a case reference and never needs you to re-confirm who you are to a stranger who called you.

Bernard Oh, the computer, yes — well, there's two things in this house that beep and only one of them is the machine. Now, is this the Varnish Support people? Because the first lad said Vintage and I've been saying Varnish all along.
Caller Vantage, yes — Vantage Support Group, and I'm the senior technician, so we're nearly there. Just confirm you're the account holder and I'll pick up where my colleague left off.

A new voice claiming seniority feels like progress and authority, so people relax and answer questions they dodged before.

Real company: A real support team logs the case and calls back on a number you can verify yourself.

Bernard Is this the Varnish people again? Only the first fellow said Vintage and I've settled on Varnish, and now I'm muddled. Give me a moment.
Caller Let me start again — Vantage Support Group, senior technician. My colleague's notes are a mess and there's a window closing on this, so I need to get you sorted quickly.
Urgency or fearFake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A fresh, more senior voice resets the conversation and adds a closing deadline, so the target feels pressure to cooperate fast.

Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and lets you call back on a number you look up yourself.

Bernard There's a window open here too, and I can't get it shut — the one over the sink, the catch has gone stiff as a board. The neighbour's cat comes in through it. Would you mind saying the name once more?
Caller Vantage Support Group — and the window that's closing is the one on my screen, not the one over your sink. Which brings me to the bit that matters: if you'll let me have a look at your computer from here, I can get all this finished off.
Remote access requestFake authority or brand impersonation

Offering to look at the computer sounds like helpful service, so the victim focuses on the fix rather than on who gets control.

Real company: A real support team never takes remote control of your machine from an unexpected call. You call them, through a number you looked up yourself.

Bernard Have a look from where? You'd be at the ends of the earth, surely. Ooh — while it's in your head, does the internet reach the bottom of the garden, do you think? I want to look up whether that cat of theirs is a tortoiseshell, only I've been telling everyone it is.
Caller From my desk — same as anyone. Your computer, on your end, with me having a look — that really is the last piece of this.
Remote access requestFake authority or brand impersonation
Bernard Oh, the computer. It's the big grey thing in the corner and I wouldn't know where to start with it. Do you keep many pets at yours? The cat next door would be up on the desk given half a chance.
Caller I'll send it in the post instead. Save us both the trouble. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
