The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support desk never needs your spoken yes to look at your own machine, and a hand-off to a supervisor is not proof of anything.

“The senior technician said he only needed a yes, and the householder said yes was a big word.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — sorry, they've passed you to me because your case is flagged as unresolved. Before we go any further I need to get this closed properly, so let me have a look at it.
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new, more senior voice sounds like a promotion of your case, so you relax and stop questioning the first caller.

Real company: A real support team keeps one named agent on your case and confirms your reference number before anything else.

Bernard Oh — well, you're the second one now, aren't you. And is it Vantage you said? I had it down as Vintage in my head. Here, hold on, the coal fire's gone out on its left side, I've just got to give it a shovel.
Caller Vantage, yes — Vantage Support Group. And leave the fire a moment, this is the unresolved case sitting on my desk and I'd rather not have it here tomorrow, so let me take a look at that machine of yours.

A new, more senior voice feels like progress and authority, so people relax and comply with the request.

Real company: A real support team gives you a ticket number and a number you can call back on your own.

Bernard It's a right bother, coal. My father had one just like it and he never did get the hang of the dampers. What was it you wanted a look at — the machine? Which one's that, then?
Caller The machine in front of you, the one you'd have been writing on. There's a flag on it from my side and I'd like to see it before the day's out — if you'd just let me look, we can put this to bed.
Urgency or fearRemote access request
Bernard You wouldn't catch it before the day's out, the way my knees are. Is it the little grey thing by the telly? Because my neighbour's lad set that up and I've never touched it since. Would you like a cup of something while we're at it?
Caller The grey one, that's the fellow. If you'd just let me have a look at it, I can clear the flag and get off your line.

Asking to look at the machine sounds like a small favour, so the victim hands over control without noticing they are giving away the whole device.

Real company: A real support team never takes remote control of your computer from an unexpected call. You call them, through the number on your bill.

Bernard Well, it's not much to look at, that's my worry. Do I need to fetch anything down from the shelf, or is it the sort of thing that just happens?
Caller It just happens, from my end — you only have to say yes and I take it from there. So, yes?
Remote access requestUrgency or fear
Bernard Oh — well — now. Yes is a big word, isn't it. Hang on, there's a smell of something catching.
Caller Right. I'll let you get back to your afternoon. Goodbye.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
