The Supervisor Hand-Off

No real company will ask for remote access to fix a problem you did not report.

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here — my colleague tells me we're nearly through, so I'll be quick. Is this Mr. Bernard?
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A senior title and a colleague's hand-off make the caller sound vetted and in control, so people relax and answer questions.

Real company: A real support team identifies itself clearly and lets you call back on a number you look up yourself.

Bernard Oh — well — now, that's the thing, isn't it. My nephew says I shouldn't be answering at all, but here I am. Vantage, did you say? I've got a cousin near Vantage, or is that Wantage. Anyway, you've caught me on a Thursday, which is lucky, because Thursdays I'm usually at the garden centre.
Caller That's great news, Mr. Bernard — Thursday works perfectly. Now, my colleague was helping you with the account review, so let's just pick up where he left off, shall we?
Supervisor hand-off

A smooth hand-off to a colleague feels like a real team picking up your case, which lowers your guard.

Real company: A real company tells you who is calling, their department, and a reference number you can verify by calling back.

Bernard Was that Thursday? I meant Friday. It's the bin day that confuses me. Now — account review, you said. I don't remember an account, but my memory's like a sieve these days. Would you like a cup of tea while we do this? I've just put the kettle on, so it's no bother.
Caller No tea for me, thank you — I'll be quick. The thing is, Mr. Bernard, we've had a flag come up on your line and the window to sort it closes today, so I'd rather not leave it sitting.
Urgency or fearUnsolicited contact

A deadline that expires today pushes people to act before they can check the story or ask anyone.

Real company: A real bank or phone company writes to you with a reference number and lets you call the number on your bill.

Bernard A flag, on the line? Like on the washing line? Oh, that reminds me — I must get the back step painted before winter. It's looking ever so sorry for itself. Anyway, you were saying. A flag, was it?
Caller A flag, yes — nothing to do with washing, I promise. Look, the quickest way to clear it is if you'd just let me have a look at your computer for a moment.
Remote access requestFake scan or planted problems

Offering to look at the computer feels like a helpful fix, so the target hands over control without suspecting anything.

Real company: A real washing machine maker never needs to see your computer to fix an appliance fault.

Bernard Have a look at it? Well, it's in the front room, under the doily. Mavis sits on it, mind — she likes the warmth. She's a parrot. Would that be all right, do you think? Only I don't know if she'd take to a stranger poking about.
Caller A parrot on the computer — right. It won't take a moment, honestly, I just need you to let me in so I can see the screen. Would Mavis mind terribly?
Remote access requestUrgency or fear

Asking to see the screen sounds like a small favour, and the rushed tone stops the person from pausing to think.

Real company: A real support team never asks to take over your screen from a cold call, and will offer a callback on a number you look up yourself.

Bernard Oh, Mavis minds everything. She's taken against the postman this week and won't say his name nicely. Let me go and shoo her off it — hold on. And while I'm up, I might just put the kettle on after all. Back in a tick.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
