phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line will not put you on a clock to look at your screen, so a deadline is the reason to hang up.

“The caller set a timer on the case, the householder talked about a slow kitchen clock, and the line went quiet.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Vantage Support Group, senior technician here, taking over your case. The first one's notes are a mess, so let's start clean — your device is the one showing the odd activity, is that right?
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new voice with a grander title feels more credible, and blaming the first caller makes the reset seem like a favour.

Real company: A real support team keeps a written record of your case and never needs you to re-confirm basic facts from scratch.

Bernard Odd activity? Oh — well, the jigsaw's the odd one out here, been a piece short since Easter and I've looked everywhere. Is this the Vantage sort of thing? My nephew mentions a Vantage, or was it Vintage… anyway, what was it you wanted a look at?
Caller No, that's not our sort of thing at all. Your device, sir — the one flagged on our list. If I could just have a look at it myself, I can clear this up.

A calm, helpful voice offering to fix the problem personally feels like service, not pressure, so the target relaxes.

Real company: A real support team never asks to look at your device directly, and would give you a case number and a number you can call back.

Bernard Have a look at what, sorry? I've the radio on rather loud and my left ear's a bit off. Oh — would you like a cup of something? You sound like you've been at it all day.
Caller Turn the radio down a moment, it matters. We're on a clock here — our system's about to mark this as unresolved, and after that it's out of my hands.
Urgency or fear

A ticking clock and the threat of losing control push the listener to act before thinking.

Real company: A real company gives you time, puts deadlines in writing, and never makes a decision depend on one phone call.

Bernard Right you are, hold on — there, that's it off. Now what's this about a clock? My kitchen one's been slow since the clocks went back, or forward, I never know which way round it is.
Caller Forget your kitchen, sir — this is the timer on your case, and it's nearly run out. What I need is very simple: just a look at your screen, and I can do the rest from my end.

Bernard My screen. Well, that's the telly, isn't it — it's got a picture of a man selling a shed at the moment. You're welcome to a look, but I'd have to find the thing that changes the channel, and the buttons on it are that small.
Caller Not the television, your computer. Sir, I'm the senior technician on this line and I'd rather finish it myself than pass it down again — just let me have a look at it.

Bernard Senior, is it? Very good. Only I've a table out in the front room with a picture on it, and there's one bit that's been missing — a patch of blue sky. You'd not credit how annoying.
Caller Honestly, I don't know why I bother. Good afternoon.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
