The Supervisor Hand-Off

phone call · Vantage Support Group · invented, like everything else here.

In real life: hang up. Nobody in this call can be followed as instructions. If a stranger rings and wants access to your computer, put the phone down and read the Help page, which is the part that is true.

The Supervisor Hand-Off

A real support line never asks to be let into your screen to fix a problem you did not report.

“The senior man asked to be let in and was offered the porch light and a bit of notice.”

The call

Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.

Caller Right, afternoon — this is the senior technician at Vantage Support Group, taking over from my colleague. I gather there's been some difficulty getting this sorted, so shall we just have a look at it now?
Fake authority or brand impersonationSupervisor hand-off

A new, more senior voice sounds like escalation and care, so the target relaxes and stops questioning the earlier steps.

Real company: A real support firm gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official line.

Bernard Oh — the senior one, is it? Well, that's very good of you. My word, you sound busy. Would you like a cup of tea while we're about it? The kettle's just going, and there's no rush at all.
Caller Busy's the word, sir, so I'll keep this brisk. If you'd just let me have a look at the machine, I can take the whole thing off your hands.

Offering to take over the problem feels helpful and lets the caller move straight to controlling the device.

Real company: A real support team explains the issue in plain terms and never asks to take over your computer on an unsolicited call.

Bernard Oh, take it off my hands, that'd be lovely. Mind, it's the jigsaw that's off my hands at the moment — one piece gone since Easter and I can't find it anywhere. Not the machine, the piece. Did you want the machine for something?
Caller The machine, yes, that's the one. And I should say there's a bit of a clock on it, so if I could just have a look before it goes any further, that'd be the thing.
Urgency or fear

A vague deadline makes the listener rush to cooperate before thinking it through.

Real company: A real support team explains the issue in plain terms and lets you take your time.

Bernard A clock as well, is there? I've got one in the hall that's been an hour fast since the clocks went back, or forward, I forget which — my neighbour says it's the other way round but I'm not sure he's right. Anyway. What was it you wanted looking at?
Caller I need a look at what's on your screen, that's all — just so I can see the state of it myself. Can we do that now, before this gets away from us?

Bernard Oh — the screen, you mean this one in front of me. It's got the crossword on it, and then the weather comes on after. Which part were you wanting a look at?
Caller All of it, really — if you'd just let me in to see the whole screen, I can tell you what's what. There's a real urgency here and I'd rather we didn't lose the chance.

Bernard Let you in? Well, the porch light's on and the door's not locked, but I'd want a bit of notice — I've not swept through. What was it you were after again?
Caller I'll try again when the line's behaving. Good afternoon.

What the pattern is

The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.

What to do instead

Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
