The Supervisor Hand-Off
No real company will pressure you to let them look at your computer before a deadline that expires.
“The case expired, the tea did not, and the computer stayed under its tea towel.”
The call
Oldest line at the top. The note beside each caller line is the Fraud Desk.
A new, more senior voice sounds like the problem is being taken seriously, which lowers the listener's guard.
Real company: A real support firm gives you a reference number and a number you can call back on their official line.
A new voice sounds more official and the pressure of an open case makes Bernard want to fix it fast.
Real company: A real support team gives you a reference number and a number you can call back yourself.
A looming deadline makes people act fast and skip the questions they would normally ask.
Real company: A real company states deadlines in writing and never rushes you into giving access on the spot.
It rushes past the odd opening and reframes access to the computer as a small, harmless favour so the target stops weighing it.
Real company: A real support team explains the problem in writing first and never needs to look at your screen to start.
A pleading, personal tone makes the request feel like a small favour between two people rather than a stranger asking to control your computer.
Real company: A real support team never asks to connect to your device from an unsolicited call, and would point you to official contact details instead.
What the pattern is
The hand-off is theatre. The new voice is the same operation, often the same room, and the promotion exists only to make the request sound checked and approved. A real escalation adds a reference number and a way for you to ring back on a number you already trust; it does not add a more confident voice and a fresh demand for access.
What to do instead
Being transferred to someone senior is not evidence of anything. Ask for a reference number and ring the company back on a number from its own website, not one read out to you. If the number they give cannot be found anywhere else, that is the answer.
