The Search-Ad Support Number
Bernard searches for help with a slow computer and rings the number at the top of the results, which belongs to an advertiser rather than to anyone official.
The story being told
Bernard searches for help with a slow computer and rings the number at the top of the results, which belongs to an advertiser rather than to anyone official.
How it really works
The top of a search page is advertising, and anyone can buy it. A number that appears above the real support page is not evidence of authority, and the person who answers is selling a service rather than fixing a fault. The "scan" is a screenshot of ordinary settings presented as evidence, and the fix is remote access plus a charge.
What to do instead
Start from the manufacturer's or provider's own site (typed in, or from a bookmark), and use the support number published there. Anything marked as an ad is a paid placement, whoever it looks like. If a "technician" shows you a screen of warnings, remember that the same screen looks like that on a healthy computer.
